Although it's not exactly a full launch quite yet, we have released a portion of our latest project: The Eponym Blog Directory.  We are hoping to enlist YOU to help us fill our directory with quality blogs in nearly 500 categories.

Our goal is to provide a one-stop location to find the most amazing blogs that exist in the blogosphere.  It's not restricted to Eponym blogs, we want everything from cat blogs, to religious blogs, to politics, even comedy blogs.  If you read it, there is a category for it and we want it!

On June 29, 2006, Eponym will be adding the French (European) language option to the system. The Blog Control Panel and the Blog interface will be presented in French, if the user selects that language. Also, system generated messages on the blog will also be presented in French, when selected.

Upcoming Eponym.com Maintenance Window
------------------
Eponym will be conducting a maintenance window on 13 May 2006 to enable the SQUID caching functionality to improve system performance.


Impact: During this windows, the Publishers' Control Panel and blogs will not be accessible.

Both interfaces will be made live as soon as it is available to minimize the impact on our users.  This maintenance window will include several architectural changes aimed at optimizing the performance of Eponym.

Architectural Changes

• Database Schema will be modified to ensure that frequently updated tables are optimized

• SQUID Caching will be deployed on Eponym. SQUID allows blog pages that have not changed to be served by a caching server rather than accessing the databases for each blog request.

SQUID continually checks content to verify that it has not changed. It if has changed then it retrieves the most updated content. This becomes the new cache. If the content has not changed then SQUID continues to serve the cached content.

An unauthenticated user may see data that is 1 minute old. However, the publisher or authenticated users will always see non-cached content.

• Logging will be improved to ensure problems can be identified and fixed rapidly.
• Serialization will be removed to ensure all tasks execute efficiently.

• Increased disk space
• Increased monthly bandwidth

• Ability to remove the Eponym components that are required for free blogs

Eponym.com Optimization-Spam Defense Maintenance Window Postponed

The promotion of the Optimization and Spam Defense Release scheduled for Saturday, February 25th has been postponed.

We have completed our functional and load testing for this release. Functional testing was completed successfully. However, load testing has shown that we need to improve response times. Our continuing goal is to ensure the service responds well under load.

We are delaying the promotion for two weeks to correct this issue. The release date is now targeted for Saturday March 11th.

We apologize for the delay and any inconvenience this may cause you.

Beginners can now check out the Getting Started guide. The Getting Started guide is there to help beginners make their initial posts to the Eponym system. Our goal is to make sure beginners are comfortable with the basics of the Eponym Blog Control Panel so they can make posts as quickly as possible.

We've also added a Spanish language User Manual in PDF format. You can download it from the sidebar of any page within the Help Blog.

Optimization and Anti-Spam Release February 25, 2006

As a part of the continuing effort to make Eponym.com the most reliable blogging platform, Eponym.com will release anti-spam and optimization enhancements to Eponym.com on February 25, 2006.

The Anti-Spam enhancements are intended to make Eponym.com more protected and secure against the attacks of spammers.

This release brings such changes as comment and trackback moderation as well as advanced blacklist functions. Users will be able to promote candidates to the global Eponym.com Blacklist. With this enhancement, users can work collectively to ensure Eponym.com has the most comprehensive and reactive Blacklist in the blogging arena.

The optimization enhancements in this release include significant architecture improvements and back-end
re-designs. These enhancements will ensure that Eponym.com is a reliable and feature-rich service.   more »

Eponym.com does not translate text entered by the user, however Spell Checker capability will be available in English, Spanish, Danish, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian and Portuguese.

More languages and locales will be added during the next 12 months.

The Blog Control Panel and the Blog interface will be presented in the user's language of choice. As well, system generated messages on the blog will also be presented in the users language of choice.   more »
