Upcoming Eponym.com Maintenance Window
------------------
Eponym will be conducting a maintenance window on 13 May 2006 to enable the SQUID caching functionality to improve system performance.

Date: 13 May EST, 14 May UTC
Start Time: 2200 EST, 0400 UTC
Duration: 1 Hour

Impact: During this windows, the Publishers' Control Panel and blogs will not be accessible.

Both interfaces will be made live as soon as it is available to minimize the impact on our users. This maintenance window will include several architectural changes aimed at optimizing the performance of Eponym.

Architectural Changes

Database Schema will be modified to ensure that frequently updated tables are optimized

SQUID Caching will be deployed on Eponym. SQUID allows
blog pages that have not changed to be served by a caching server
rather than accessing the databases for each blog request.

SQUID continually checks content to verify that it has not changed. It
if has changed then it retrieves the most updated content. This becomes
the new cache. If the content has not changed then SQUID continues to
serve the cached content.

An unauthenticated user may see data that is 1 minute old. However,
the publisher or authenticated users will always see non-cached content.

Logging will be improved to ensure problems can be identified and fixed rapidly.

Serialization will be removed to ensure all tasks execute efficiently.

The release date is now targeted for Saturday March 11th.

We apologize for the delay and any inconvenience this may cause you.
